Generous mom in Virginia distributes her $100,000 annual lottery earnings among her daughters
Virginia Woman Wins Top Prize in Virginia Lottery for the Third Time
A woman from Gloucester, Virginia, named Carolyn Keffer, has made history by winning the top prize of $100,000 a year from the Virginia Lottery's scratch-off game, $100,000 a Year. This marks her third significant lottery win, adding to her impressive streak of luck.
Keffer, who is in her 60s, purchased the winning ticket at Food Lion on 7465 Hargett Blvd. in Gloucester. The cost for a $100,000 a Year scratch-off ticket is $20.
After the Gloucester woman's win, only one top prize remains in play. Each ticket provides a chance to win a prize ranging from $20 to $1m, with the $100,000 a Year ticket offering one top prize.
Keffer chose to receive her winnings as annuity payments of $100,000 per year for 10 years, totaling $1 million. She decided to share her winnings with her two daughters, choosing to split the $100,000 per year between them. Keffer's daughters, who will receive a share of the winnings annually, plan to use the money to buy their own houses.
This win serves as an example that the saying "lightning never strikes twice" may not apply to luck. In fact, Keffer has won a total of 25 top prizes from the Virginia Lottery, making her the woman with the highest number of individual wins in one event. Her previous win occurred on the February 20 daytime drawing of the Pick 4 game in 2025, where she bought 25 tickets with the combination 4-4-4-4 for the Pick 4 game after dreaming about the numbers appearing. Each ticket won the top prize of $5,000, so her total winnings from this event were $125,000.
Another Virginia woman, Sharon Godsey, has also won two lifetime lottery prizes, each worth $100,000. Godsey's wins were spaced about 12 years apart, with one win happening around 2013 and the second coming recently in 2025 from a Powerball drawing, where she matched four of the first five numbers and used the Power Play option to double her guaranteed prize from $50,000 to $100,000.
The Virginia Lottery, the organization responsible for administering lottery games in Virginia, announced Keffer's win on Monday. With her first winnings, Keffer purchased a house. She plans to extend her house with the addition of more rooms and buy an affordable Corvette.
It is important to note that Keffer's winnings will be subject to applicable taxes. The odds of winning the top prize from the $100,000 a Year game are 1 in 612,000.
